Water quality, 6PPD-Q (‘tire chemical’) impacts

Scientific collaboration and public engagement, including research on water quality, 6PPD-Q (‘tire chemical’) impacts

Staying alive, from egg to fry

Egg to fry survival depends on a lot of factors, including hatchery techniques, equipment, water quality and more. Choosing quality broodstock is often overlooked in relation to incubation survivability, but will be discussed as well to optimize salmon life cycle practices.

Watershed Restoration for Salmonids

When to do it?
When not?
Examples of?
How and Why? and
Community response to to it;
Climate change, habitat loss and fishing pressures are negatively affecting Pacific salmon at every stage of their lifecycle. Gain an understanding of how one strategy, the Salmon Habitat Restoration Center of Expertise, is supporting and restoring salmon habitat into the future.

Rapid environmental change affects salmon and people: sharing ideas on how to adapt.

Through collaborative work, we will share:
-how environmental conditions in salmon habitats are rapidly changing
-how salmon are responding
-ideas on how to adapt to climate change

Building a Strong Community

This panel presentation and discussion will bring together a variety of voices from the salmon enhancement community to share their insights and experiences on innovative ways to support, promote, and grow your organization and membership. Topics covered will include recruiting and managing volunteers, liability and insurance, effective community engagement, utilizing social media for outreach, incorporating new techniques and technology, and creating an inclusive and supportive community. Join us to learn from and gain practical tips and advice for growing your own organization and community.

Brood Collection

A session on broodstock and gamete collection and egg fertilization - reducing stress every step of the way is reflected in the quality and survival of your stock. Sign up for methods, pointers and some hands on practice on river safety; planning; adult capture, handling, holding, transport and spawning.

Bug Lifecycles

Bug Stories and Tips for teaching to schools, Streamkeepers and public on presentation and equipment.
10:45am -12:00pm

Invertebrates - Sentinels of Aquatic Health

Collection, identification and life history, streamside.

Salmon Dissection

Up to your elbows in fish guts! The workshop will consist of a hands on dissection of adult Coho Salmon, with overview of their vital organs and brief description of functions of the organs.

Rearing and Release

Rearing and release strategies used by the Salmonid Enhancement program hatcheries in BC. We will review the numerous applied methods which allow us to raise and release healthy salmon for optimal survivability and focused enhancement initiatives.

It’s Miller Time - Barrier Remediation on Sinmax Creek’s Miller Property

Following a habitat assessment in Sinmax in October 2024, SFC is considering immediate, initial restoration actions to address barriers to spawning fish on the Miller property in the form of a collapsed series of Newbury riffles. This project has prioritized collaboration between Adams Lake Indian Band, Simpcw First Nations, Thompson Rivers University, and local residents. It is expected to increase available kokanee spawning habitat from 1 km to approx. ~7 km of accessible stream.

Fish Health 101: Anything but simple

Raising healthy fish is the goal, but challenges often get in the way. Maintaining the health of hatchery fish requires a multi-faceted approach, including biosecurity, water quality and overall welfare to name a few. Understanding why your fish get sick is discussed and how the symptoms themselves, are simply the causes of a separate issue.

Spawner Surveys and ID

Spawner ID and Survey techniques Streamkeeper Module 12: How to identify spawning salmon, enumerate your returns and assessment data management. More then just numbers, what are your fish telling you?

Staying alive, from egg to fry

Egg to fry survival depends on a lot of factors, including hatchery techniques, equipment, water quality and more. Choosing quality broodstock is often overlooked in relation to incubation survivability, but will be discussed as well to optimize salmon life cycle practices.

Restoration Water Managment (drought) best managment practices

Restoration and water management pertaining to climate change drought issues and effects on salmon.

The impacts of large-scale fires and warming climate

Discussion around fire and weather/climate interactions, including the potential impact of climatic change and how this will affect watersheds and salmon productivity

Connected Waters: Restoring connectivity and function to salmon habitats impacted by flood infrastructure

Floodgates and pump stations are killing fish and preventing the flow of fish, water and nutrients across floodplains. In the Lower Mainland several organizations are working to transform the regional flood regime to protect salmon and their habitats. From research to relationship building and restoration successes, there’s plenty to unpack in how we can manage floods with salmon in mind.

Fostering Aquatic Stewardship in YOUR Community: Education and Outreach

Join the DFO Stream to Sea team to learn new and engaging ways to deliver salmon and watershed education and outreach to your community. Hands-on activities and tips and tricks of the trade will be shared!

Rapid environmental change affects salmon and people: sharing ideas on how to adapt.

Through collaborative work, we will share:

Advanced Stream Habitat Survey

Advanced Habitat Survey
Streamkeeper Module 2 – Creekside Participants will learn how to assess physical characteristics of stream habitat in order to compare sites or streams with confidence, monitor long-term changes, or document impacts of suspected habitat problems.

Leveraging funding to maximize projects

This session will host presentations to provide ideas on how to successfully get funding for your projects through grants and other fundraising methods. Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion giving attendees a chance to ask questions, receive advice and share their own fundraising successes.

Urgent action underway for salmon struggling amidst drought

The Pacific Salmon Foundation has activated time-sensitive pilot projects across the province, from B.C.’s interior watersheds to Vancouver Island streams to help salmon as they struggle to survive in the face of extreme drought conditions. DFO has put together guidelines for community groups on how to approach drought situations.

Mass Marking and Assessment

The role of mass marking in salmon conservation through improved assessment and management. Could include other marking/assessment content (ie. PIT tagging).

Barrier Passage (determination of, and prioritization)

Description Coming Soon.

A Salmon Recovery model for BC; why do we need one, how could it work?

In BC, there are many entities and efforts that are working on salmon recovery, but there is no system or established model to guide this work. This results in there being no connection from one watershed to the next, no system for entities in the same Region to align and coordinate, and no system to understand priorities at a provincial scale.
The First Nations Fisheries Council and the Pacific Salmon Foundation have been holding a series of “Salmon Action Dialogues” to assess this challenge, and have developed an idea for a “Made in BC Model” for salmon recovery that could address this management system challenge. This session will include a presentation of our diagnosis and explain the recommendations for the “Made in BC Model” and how it can work. Hanna McComber from FNFC, Jason Hwang from PSF and salmon stewardship veteran Tom Rutherford will share perspectives and participate in a panel Q&A with workshop participants.
